Hoverflies are excellent examples of Batesian mimicry (named after H W Bates who first described it in 1862). They generally mimic bees and wasps – insects that sting and also taste unpleasant, so are avoided by predators.
What kind of fly hovers?
Scientifically, they’re known as hover flies (Family Syrphidae). I call them flies that fly endlessly. There are a lot of different kinds of these flies, and they’re pretty common. You can usually find the adult flies hovering around near flowers because they feed on the flower nectar.
