What river is La Rochelle on?
It was part of a great project of a North-South canal connecting the river Loire to the Adour. The project was ordered by imperial decision of Napoleon I on July 17, 1805, with the objective of connecting Niort with La Rochelle. It was started in 1806, but only open in 1875, and only reached La Rochelle in 1888.
Why is La Rochelle famous?
Capital of the Charente-Maritime, La Rochelle is well known for its postcard-pretty Old Port picture. Protected by the Chaîne tower and the Saint-Nicolas tower, the old port has inspired numerous artists. After a walk on the quays, the visitor is invited to go along the beautiful narrow streets of the old town.

Is La Rochelle expensive?
La Rochelle is one of our favourite french destinations. We haven’t been for a couple of years now but eating out isn’t too expensive. The harbour area is beautiful and vibrant in the evenings. There are loads of eateries lining the harbour but a lot of them are tourist orientated and perhaps overpriced.
Does La Rochelle have a beach?
La Rochelle, located north of Charente-Maritime, close to the Island of Ré, is not just a beach destination! There are only three sandy beaches (fairly small, each about 200 meters long) but its architectural heritage compensate for this lack! As for the beaches, Concurrence Beach is the closest to the Old Port.

What do you most enjoy about living in La Rochelle? You can walk everywhere. We live in a quartier called La Genette, which has everything on its doorstep; from our house, the sea is a five-minute walk and the town centre 10 minutes. We have some amazing local food shops, just a couple of minutes away.
