Is gear oil and manual transmission fluid the same?

The most obvious answer to this question is that gear oil is generally intended for use in manual gear boxes and transmission fluid is for automatic transmissions.

What happens if the gearbox oil is low?

Low fluid levels can cause gears to miss, which will result in a grinding sensation. The occasional slipped gear might seem like a small issue at first, but it’s always a good idea to have the transmission looked at when this occurs to avoid costly repairs in the future.

Can I use 75w90 gear oil instead of 80W90?

SAE 75W-90 maintains a more consistent thickness, or viscosity, across a wide temperature range. It’s thicker when exposed to high heat and thinner under colder, wintry conditions than 80W-90. The use of 75W-90 gear oil is recognized by OEMs as a contributor to overall fuel economy.

What is the difference between SAE 90 and 80W90?

SAE 90 is a very large scale. 80W-90 is the low end of the scale, while 85W-90 is the high end of the scale. Both are single grade SAE 90 oils. SAE 75W-90, is more appropriate in most climates where 90 is specified, specially if it is a transmission.

Can I use SAE 90 instead of 80w90?

Yes it is the same… close enough anyway. SAE 90 gear oil is equivalent to 50wt engine oil (SAE 80 = 30wt), so you could always dump that in instead if you want.

Can I use engine oil as gear oil?

No. You can’t use the engine oil as a lubricant in your gearbox. Every lubricant possesses some physical and chemical properties to suit the application in which it is used. If it is used in applications for which it is not meant, then it will hamper the performance of the system.

What is 85w140 gear oil used for?

Havoline Gear Oils are recommended for use in many spiral bevel and hypoid differentials, power dividers, and oil-lubricated steering axle wheel bearings. Their multi-viscosity characteristics allow their use in equipment operating over a broad ambient temperature range.

What’s the difference between 75 140 and 85 140 gear oil?

85w-140 transfers heat MUCH slower (because it flows slower) than 75w-140 causing more heat build-up. 75w-90 is even better and will bring diff temps down further, but it does not provide the shock loading properties that our rear ends require.

Is 75W140 better than 80w90?

Either one is fine. Generally the synthetic 75w-140 is for HD applications such as towing, but it will work fine in any application. The synthetic is more expensive as you likely already know. Hope this helps the confusion.
