What is the history of trapping?
Trapping may be one of the oldest methods of hunting. Since prehistoric times, man has trapped wild animals for food, fur, sport, and survival. In our country, Native Americans were the first trappers. Their catch provided meat for food, and fur and leather for clothing.
When did people start trapping?
Foothold traps were first invented to keep poachers out of European estates in the 1600s (see Mantrap (snare)). Blacksmiths made traps of iron in the early 1700s for trappers. By the 1800s companies began to manufacture steel foothold traps.

A mouse trap might not break your finger, but it’ll hurt. Rat traps, though, which are about 4 times larger and stronger than mouse traps and usually have serrated edges, could break your finger. If they don’t break your finger, you could still have severe bruising or pinched nerves.
