Does it matter what oil you put in a lawn mower?
When choosing lawn mower oil, use a high-quality detergent oil classified as “For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ” or higher. Do not use special additives. Synthetic oils are an acceptable oil at all temperatures. The use of synthetic oil does not alter required oil change intervals.
Can you use synthetic oil in a John Deere lawn mower?
Yes! We have modified our engine oil recommendations to state that you may now use a synthetic 5W30 (100074WEB) or 10W30 oil in all temperature ranges. Keep in mind that the use of synthetic oil does not prevent you from performing your regularly scheduled lawn mower maintenance (i.e. check oil, change oil, etc.).
Is it OK to put 10w40 in a 5w20?
You can let it cool off enough so you do not burn yourself.. but keep it near hot does the best. And a 10W40 would invalidate your warranty… just so you know. In a 5W20 engine. You could use a 0W20 oil (I use 0W20 oil) in cold weather and it would be Ok by Ford.
Can I use any 10w30 oil in my generator?
So your generator, can it run on 5W-30 or 10W-30? Most likely. Almost anything can. But, if it’s a hot running air cooled engine, and you use it in the summer, a straight 30 oil would be better.

Above 32°F, use SAE 30. Below 40°F and down to -10°F, use 10W-30. Synthetic 5W-30 can be used in all temperatures. Oil should be changed after the first 20-30 hours of operation and every 100 hours of run time thereafter.

Synthetic 5w30 motor oil will make an excellent choice and can be used used in portable generators. It will work in very low temperatures from -20°F to around 100°F making it a popular choice. Then you may be best going for thicker oil like 10w30.
