How strong is the vacuum of space?
Measurement
Vacuum quality | Torr | Pa |
---|---|---|
Ultra high vacuum | 1×10−9 to 1×10−12 | 1×10−7 to 1×10−10 |
Extremely high vacuum | < 1×10−12 | < 1×10−10 |
Outer space | 1×10−6 to < 1×10−17 | 1×10−4 to < 3×10−15 |
Perfect vacuum | 0 | 0 |
Can you hear in outer space?
No, you cannot hear any sounds in near-empty regions of space. Sound travels through the vibration of atoms and molecules in a medium (such as air or water). In space, where there is no air, sound has no way to travel.
Why astronauts Cannot talk in space?
When astronauts are out in space, they can whistle, talk, or even yell inside their own spacesuit, but the other astronauts would not hear the noise. Because there is nothing out in space (like an atmosphere), the sound waves from one astronaut’s whistling can’t travel over to the other astronaut’s ears.
Can you smell in space?
