When should I apply to MIT?
Most U.S. students apply to MIT at the beginning of their final year of high school, and international applicants should do the same. Only accepted students are required to send final grades, and we understand that they will not be available until the summer months. Most applicants are 17–19 years of age.
Is MIT stressful?
MIT can be very stressful, especially freshman year, because many new students aren’t used to this level of rigor you will experience when doing your first problem sets, writing your first papers, and taking your first midterms.

MIT in my view is one of the toughest schools in the world. The students are incredibly brilliant, the institution with the most students placing Top 500 in the Putnam competition every year. While the students come across as “geeky,” they are incredibly strong in the math, sciences, and engineering.

Interviews are not a required part of the MIT application. While we try to offer as many interviews as we can, we have limited availability and may not able to offer interviews to all applicants. If your interview is waived, it will not put you at a disadvantage in the admissions process.

MIT provides financial aid on the basis of financial need only. We don’t award money based on any measure of merit—academic, athletic, artistic, or anything else. Can you get into MIT with bad grades?
But most people who apply to MIT have good grades and scores. Having bad grades or scores will certainly hurt you, but I’m sorry to say that having great grades and scores doesn’t really help you – it just means that you’re competitive with most of the rest of our applicants. MIT is very self-selecting in that regard.
Is there an entrance exam for MIT?
Yes. In addition to the SAT or ACT, you will also have to take at least two SAT subject tests. These are tests that you can take to showcase your particular skills. As a math and science-focused institution, MIT requires you to take either the Math Level 1 or Math Level 2 subject test.
