What does language proficiency mean on the Common App?
It used to be when you clicked the “Help” menu in this section, the Common App offered this guidance: Proficiency in a language is about how comfortable you are using another language as a form of communication. In order to be proficient, you must be able to communicate effectively and converse comfortably.
What should I write in language proficiency?
There are alternatives as far as the proficiency phrasing goes, as well:
- Advanced: native, fluent, proficient, advanced, mother tongue, upper-intermediate.
- Mid-range: intermediate, conversational, competent, professional.
- Beginner: elementary, beginner, basic, pre-intermediate, limited working proficiency.
What does first language on Common App mean?
The drop-down menu allows you to check more than one box for each language: First Language; Speak; Read; Write; Spoken at Home. So if English is your first language (which means the language you spoke when you first began talking), most likely you also speak, read, write and speak it at home.
