Who invented MathsWatch?
Ken Smith at MathsWatch“Working with Duo Design we have developed a system that can take a written answer to a multi-step problem, analyse that answer and allocate marks just like an examiner would.
Do you have to pay for MathsWatch?
Our subscription service allows teachers, students and parents to access the MathsWatch resource 24/7. Another feature is its low price (works out as less than 50p per student for an average-sized school).

What’s a SURD?
A number that can’t be simplified to remove a square root (or cube root etc). Examples: • √2 (square root of 2) can’t be simplified further so it is a surd. • √4 (square root of 4) CAN be simplified to 2, so it is NOT a surd.
What does Index form mean?
The index form of a number is that number written as an exponential expression, or a single number raised to another number.
What is the index form of 64?
64 is a basic numeral or number. 43 is the index form (or power form) of 64. 4 × 4 × 4 is the expanded form of 64. For 64 = 4 × 4 × 4 = 43, the base number 4 appears three times as a factor of the basic numeral (or number) 64.
What is the index form of 36?
We can write 36 as a product of prime factors: 36 = 2² × 3². The expression 2² × 3² is said to be the prime factorization of 36.
What are the 3 rules of indices?
Laws of indices
- The first law: multiplication. If the two terms have the same base (in this case.
- The second law: division. If the two terms have the same base (in this case.
- The third law: brackets. If a term with a power is itself raised to a power then the powers are multiplied together.
- Negative powers.
- Power of zero.
- Fractional powers.
What is the first index law?
LAW 1: The first law of indices tells us that when multiplying two identical numbers together that have different powers (eg: 2² x 2³), the answer will be the same number to the power of both exponents added together. The a represents the number that is divided by itself and m and n represent the powers.
What are the four index laws?
Index laws are the rules for simplifying expressions involving powers of the same base number. = ( 3 √ 27)2 = (3)2 = 9. (2) Watch out for powers of negative numbers. For example, (−2)3 = −8 and (−2)4 = 16, so (−x)5 = −x5 and (−x)6 = x6.
What is the sixth Index law?
In general: This formula tells us that when a quotient is raised to a power, both the numerator and denominator are raised to the power. This is the sixth index law and is known as the Index Law for Powers of Quotients.
Who invented laws of indices?
Carl Linnaeus
What is the fifth index law?
In general: This formula tells us that when a product is raised to a power, every factor of the product is raised to the power. This is the fifth index law and is known as the Index Law for Powers of Products.
Who is the father of algebra?
Al-Khwarizmi
How do you calculate exponents?
The base B represents the number you multiply and the exponent “x” tells you how many times you multiply the base, and you write it as “B^ x.” For example, 8^3 is 8X8X8=512 where “8” is the base, “3” is the exponent and the whole expression is the power.
