Does a bathroom scale measure mass or weight?
Scales measure weight, which is the force acting on a mass that is equal to the object’s mass times its acceleration due to gravity. A scale can’t measure mass directly, because the weighing mechanism and the weight of any given object are dependent on local gravity.
Why do we use mass instead of weight?
If you use weight instead of mass to measure matter, your answer changes based on where you are. Mass is a consistent measure of the amount of matter, but weight isn’t. Mass also creates the gravitational force that defines weight, which is why it appears in the equation for weight.
How much would I weigh on moon?
Your weight on the Moon is 16.5% what you would experience on Earth. In other words, if you weighed 100 kg on Earth, you would weigh a mere 16.5 kg on the Moon. For you imperial folks, imagine you tipped the scales at 200 pounds. Your weight on the Moon would only be 33 pounds.
Can an object have zero weight and non zero mass?
It is not possible for a body to have zero mass ( no body can exist without mass ) but a body can have zero weight….. Weight = Mass × Gravitational acceleration. At the center of the earth the gravitational acceleration is 0 so multiply 0 with mass and any no. multiplied with 0 is 0 so weight can be 0.
Is it possible for an object to have no weight?
Yes, a body can have mass but zero weight. Mass is the total matter in a body, while weight is the force by which the body is attracted.
Can an object have 0 weight?
Yes indeed, and in fact every object with mass can have no weight. Scientifically, weight is the force that a surface applies to an object. On the Earth, your weight comes from the ground pushing up against gravity. So if you wanted an object that has mass, but is weightless, all you have to do is jump.
Why do we feel weightless in freefall?
When in free fall, the only force acting upon your body is the force of gravity – a non-contact force. Since the force of gravity cannot be felt without any other opposing forces, you would have no sensation of it. You would feel weightless when in a state of free fall.
