How beaches are formed?
Beaches are wave-deposited accumulations of sediment located at the shoreline. They require a base to reside on, usually the bedrock geology, waves to shape them, sediment to form them, and most are also affected by tides.
Where are beaches usually found?
Though some beaches form on freshwater locations, most beaches are in coastal areas where wave or current action deposits and reworks sediments. Erosion and changing of beach geologies happens through natural processes, like wave action and extreme weather events.

What causes swash and backwash?
When a wave breaks, water is washed up the beach. This is called the swash . Then the water runs back down the beach, which is called the backwash . With a constructive wave, the swash is stronger than the backwash.
What is produced by longshore transport?
Longshore transport is the result of a longshore current that conveys sand put in suspension or mobilized on the seabed by waves (see entries on Waves and Coastal Currents).
What kind of erosion can longshore drift create?
Longshore drift has a very powerful influence on the shape and composition of the coastline. It changes the slopes of beaches and creates long, narrow sandbars of land called spits, that extend out from shore. Longshore drift may also create or destroy entire “barrier islands” along a shoreline.

In quiet water areas, such as bays, wave energy is dispersed, so sand is deposited. The wave erodes the bottom of the cliff, eventually causing the cliff to collapse.
