What level of radiation is harmful?
To cause death within hours of exposure to radiation, the dose needs to be very high, 10Gy or higher, while 4-5Gy will kill within 60 days, and less than 1.5-2Gy will not be lethal in the short term. However all doses, no matter how small, carry a finite risk of cancer and other diseases.
How do you know if you have been exposed to radiation?
Symptoms of Acute Radiation Syndrome (ARS), or radiation sickness, may include nausea, vomiting, headache and diarrhea. These symptoms start within minutes to days after the exposure, can last for minutes up to several days, and may come and go.
What should you do if radiation is in the air?
If you are indoors during a radiation emergency:
- Stay inside. Close and lock all windows and doors. Go to the basement or the middle of the building.
- If possible, turn off fans, air conditioners, and forced-air heating units that bring air in from the outside. Close fireplace dampers.
Can you filter radiation from air?
Air filtration and radiation mitigation have a long history. Since radioactive fallout is particulate in nature, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission recognized that it could be filtered using mechanical filtration and developed HEPA filtration to protect scientists from exposure to radioactive particles.
Can a mask protect you from radiation?
Wearing a particulate mask prevents you from inhaling the radioactive dust. Air itself doesn’t really become radioactive. There is a process called neutron activation which can temporarily make stable nuclides radioactive, but air isn’t really affected by this process enough to pose a hazard.
How do gas masks protect from radiation?
A gas mask will allow the user to avoid inhaling the radioactive particles that will probably reach the lungs during a radiation blast. It can filter the air that gets through the mask, and it can clean and purify it so that it can be safely inhaled by the user.
