Is there a better telescope than Hubble?
Overview. Webb often gets called the replacement for Hubble, but we prefer to call it a successor. After all, Webb is the scientific successor to Hubble; its science goals were motivated by results from Hubble. Hubble’s science pushed us to look to longer wavelengths to “go beyond” what Hubble has already done.
Is Hubble still operating?
Hubble is the only telescope designed to be maintained in space by astronauts. The telescope was still operating as of 24 April 2020, its 30th anniversary, and could last until 2030–2040. One successor to the Hubble telescope is the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which is scheduled to be launched in late 2021.

Can we see the past in space?
The time it takes for light from objects in space to reach Earth means that when we look at planets, stars and galaxies, we’re actually peering back in time. When we look up at the stars, we are looking back in time. Every time we look at something ‘up there’ we’re seeing it as it was in the past.
Why do we see stars on Earth but not in space?
Our daytime sky is bright because of the diffusion of light through the atmosphere. Even in space, stars are relatively dim, and simply don’t produce enough light to show up in photos set for bright sunlight.
