Do doctors have to tell the truth?
Health professionals are expected to always tell the truth. This is based on the argument that, lying is wrong and disrespecting the person’s autonomy is not right. However, this may not necessarily be the case, as the ‘right not to know’ the truth, should as well be respected by them.
Are doctors allowed to lie?
When a health practitioner breaches his or her duty of care, it can lead to delayed treatment, improper treatment, or emotional trauma. However, doctors can legally lie in some situations.
Will doctors call if your results are bad?
If a normal or negative test result comes back, the physician can telephone the patient with the “good news,” and patients have the option of canceling the follow-up appointment. Although it is preferable to give bad news face-to-face, there may be times when giving bad news over the phone is unavoidable.

Most people will get the result of their breast biopsy within 7 to 10 days. Some people may get their results a bit sooner, and for some people it may be longer depending on whether more tests need to be done on the tissue.

Giving test results to a patient during a telephone conversation is fine, as long as you know you’re speaking with the patient. If there’s any doubt about the patient’s identity, ask him or her to provide some verifying information (e.g., date of birth, Social Security number, or the date of his or her last visit).
Can a nurse tell a patient their diagnosis?
Yes, an RN or RPN can communicate a diagnosis if the controlled act is delegated to them. The nurse (delegate) and physician/NP (delegator) must meet the requirements outlined in CNO’s Authorizing Mechanisms practice guideline. Communicating a diagnosis to a patient has potential risks.
Can a doctor tell you results over the phone?
Giving information over the phone is reasonable to do if done properly. Clearly, a doctor or a doctor’s office shouldn’t call and leave a message on the answering machine. But if a patient calls for the results, someone in the office should be available to give the test results.
Can a receptionist give test results?
We cannot give test results out to anyone else so please ensure you don’t ask a friend or relative to call for you.
