A peasant in general could become neither, unless they were no longer a peasant and could afford the very expensive goods required to survive as a knight, or a samurai. He was once a peasant himself, and rose up to become a samurai.

Did Samurai dual wield?
Did Samurai dual wield swords? A very few did. The practice was well known, a few learned and trained in it, fewer actually did it in combat or in a duel. Musashi would use two wooden swords, a bokken of katana length and a shorter sword.

Why is dual wield impractical?
