What is the purpose of a TSI test?
The purpose of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is to determine if you are ready for college-level work in the areas of reading, writing and math. Success in these areas can help you complete your college degree or certificate program.
Can I take TSI test online?
You may test online at home on your computer for a $25 fee. You must have access to a computer with a microphone and a webcam, as this is how the online proctor will monitor you as you test. Please complete the TSI Assessment Request Form and choose the online option.

The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is part of the Texas Success Initiative program designed to help your college or university determine if you are ready for college-level course work in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.
What is the passing score for the TSI?
You are considered college ready if your score falls within the range of 350–390. If your score is 349 or lower, you may be placed in a developmental course or intervention.
Which subjects are tested on the TSI?
The TSI exam covers 4 different sections – mathematics, reading, writing, and an essay section. The TSI exam consists primarily of multiple choice questions.

How many questions can I miss on the TSI Math?
You will need a score of 351 to pass, which, once again, means that you can safely miss between 1–3 questions. The TSI Math tests you on Algebra I and II, Geometry, and some Statistics, only probability and measures of central tendency.
Can I use calculator on TSI?
Can I bring a calculator to the test? No. Calculators are not allowed. Additionally, no study materials or other reference materials may be used during the test.
What are the benefits of taking the TSI in a timely manner?
Session attendance is mandatory. You are encouraged to complete TSI advising early in the semester. Attending a TSI advising session is an important step in preparing for registration. Doing so in a timely manner will allow you to partner with a TSI advisor to identify future developmental education needs.
Who is exempt from TSI test?
A student who is serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard, or as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States and has been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment is exempt.
Do I have to take the TSI if I took the SAT?
You do not have to take the TSI Assessment if you: You have completed the SAT, ACT, or other approved assessment exam with the minimum score needed for TSI exemption.
