Why don’t we call Japan Nippon?
“Japan” and “Nippon” do not sound similar. In Japanese, “Nippon” is written as 日本. 日 means “Sun” or “Day” and 本 in this case represents “origin”. Chinese people called it so because Japan is located in the East and literally is in the direction where the sun rises (in other words, where the sun originates).

Can you wear swimsuit in onsen?
The majority of onsen doesn’t allow you to wear bathers or any other clothes while soaking in the hot spring. Since you are sharing the bathwater with other guests bathing naked is the most hygienic way and helps to keep the water clean. However, there are a few onsens where you can wear bathers.
Can you get STD from Onsen?
Transmission of STDs through a hot tub or pool are only possible if two people are engaging in sexual activity while in the water. An intimate exchange of bodily fluids is necessary in order for those types of diseases to be passed along to someone else.
Why are tattoos not allowed in Onsen?

Should you shower after Onsen?
Most onsen experts don’t recommend showering after a hot spring bath because it reduces the effects of the nutrients and minerals in the water. However, when you have sensitive skin or visit an onsen with strong sulfur or acidic springs you should take a shower to prevent possible irritations.
Are Onsen hygienic?
Hygiene levels at onsen are usually very high and you are required to clean yourself and rinse before entering the onsen which significantly reduces the likelihood of the water being dirty. Alongside consistent cleaning throughout the day and a thorough deep clean at night, onsen are very hygienic.
