What is Langar and how did it begin?
The langar (or free kitchen) was introduced by Guru Nanak , who was the founder of Sikhism and the first Guru, because of his belief in the oneness of humanity . He offered free meals to everyone, regardless of their caste , gender or wealth. It was a place where everyone gathered and ate together.
What happens in the Langar?
The free food kitchen, or Langar Every Gurdwara has a Langar attached to it where food is served to anyone without charge. The term Langar is also used for the communal meal served at the Gurdwaras. This ensures that any visitor to the Gurdwara, whatever the dietary restrictions of their faith, can eat in the Langar.
