Why did immigrants from Europe come to America?
Most Southern European immigrants were motivated by economic opportunity in the United States, while Eastern Europeans (primarily Jews) fled religious persecution. The number of European immigrants in the United States has declined slightly since 2000 (see Figure 1).
Why is it so hard to move to the US?
We are pretty much like the only country that has permanent residency by lottery too. The US has looser immigration standards than Canada and most of Europe (for non-EU immigrants). Unfortunately we are now a very difficult country to move to, as it the system is more geared towards family visas and temporary visas.

State laws designed to help immigrants integrate into society include helping them pass naturalization tests and learn English, removing barriers to licensing for certain occupations, and creating integration positions or task forces.
How does immigration change a society?
Migration allows for workers to benefit from higher wages in growing areas and stimulates the economy to operate more efficiently by creating larger and more porous labor and consumer markets. Indeed the logic for lessening barriers to migration is similar to that of international free trade.
How do refugees contribute to society?
By providing them with the right to work, to health, and to education, refugees can start productive lives in their host countries. The faster they can integrate into the labor force, the faster they can become productive members of society.
