Why are my fog lights not working?
Common reasons for this to happen: Blown Fuse: As a first resort, many mechanics will inspect your fuses in the event an electrical component, like the fog or driving lights, fails. A vehicle with a bad relay or bad ground may not be able to successfully power your fog or driving lights.
Do fog lights have a fuse?
When installing fog lights to a fuse in the fuse box, the amperage must be considered and the appropriate circuit must be used. Fog lights would overload low amp circuits and blow a fuse. The relay for the lights has four posts, and it can be mounted anywhere under the hood.
How do I know if my fog light relay is bad?
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Fog Light Relay
- Clicking sound from the relay. One of the first symptoms of a problem with the fog light relay is an audible clicking noise from the relay.
- Fog lights are always on.
- Fog lights do not turn on.
Where is the fog light relay?
The most common location of the fog light relay is in the underhood fuse and relay box. The underhood fuse/relay box can be mounted in any of several different locations under the hood. It can be mounted on either the driver or passenger side, and either the front or rear, of the engine compartment.
What fuse to use for fog lights?
Splice a red wire from the headlight wire to the relay terminal “30.” This line needs a 10-amp inline fuse, so be sure and wire one in. The final terminal on the relay is numbered “87.” This terminal will carry power to the fog lights. The fog lights each have two wires, one for ground and one for the 12V power.
Where do you connect the power wire for fog lights?
Connect (white) power wires together with the matching (white) power wires from each light. After that, connect them to the Y- shaped (white) power wire that’s had the other end of it run inside the vehicle. Performing some of the above wiring work may require use of common electric wiring and cable tools.
Do LED fog lights need a relay?
A relay is an electrical switch that lets a low current circuit control a high current circuit such as a large LED light bar. If you are using a light pod that does not have a very large amp draw, you may not need a relay switch, but if you are using a larger LED light bar, they are a must have.
Can you wire fog lights without a relay?
Can you wire lights without relays = yes, easily. Is it the best way = not really. As long as the switch, fuses, and wire are the right correct size for the amperage draw nothing bad will happen, no smoke, no burnt wires, no jeep self-immolation.
Do relays have to be grounded?
The relay must be on the ground side of the load when the voltages above the coil are hot. The case should be grounded. The relay can be on either side of the load for hot switch voltages that are lower than the coil.
What is a 12 volt relay?
12 Volt Automotive Relays Similar to a single pole single throw ON-ON switch, these relays can ‘change over’ from one circuit to another, and can be used to either turn a circuit on, or turn a circuit off.
How do you wire a fog light to a toggle switch?
How to Hook Foglights to a Toggle Switch
- Cut the wire connecting your fog lights to their power source using your diagonal pliers.
- Remove 1/4 inch of insulation from both new ends of the power wire with your diagonal pliers.
- Connect the wire running to your power source to the “source” terminal of your toggle switch.
Can I connect my fog lights to headlights?
If you do wire them into the headlights, make the headlight wire be the trigger on a relay. Then wire the relay into the battery, ground, and fog lights. You don’t want to drive the fog lights through your headlight wire.
Can you add fog lights to a car that doesn’t have them?
Installing fog lights on a vehicle that doesn’t have them already is trickier than replacing old fog lights. You’ll have to add some wiring yourself, and you may have to drill a hole for the lights. Most vehicles already have a hole you can run these wires through.
How do you wire fog lights to turn off high beams?
You can simply run a wire from terminal 86 of your fog light relay to a toggle switch to ground. Turn on your headlights on low beam and push the OEM button for the fog lights. When you turn on your high beams, flip the toggle switch and your fog lights will come on with your high beams.
Do fog lights have to turn off with high beams?
If you notice on your vehicle, when you activate your high beams while the fog lamps are activated, the fog lamps are automatically turned off. When you turn off the high beams, the fog lights come back on. If the fog lamps remained on, you would have a total of 6 lamps displayed, which is illegal.
How can I get fog lights on without headlights?
If you don’t want to mess with the wiring and/or relays, you can simply turn the light switch half way to the low-beam on position. The fogs will come on, but the low-beams will stay off.
Should you keep fog lights on?
Use the fog lights only when you have very low visibility, and don’t forget to turn them off when the fog has lifted. Even though it may be legal, it can make visibility difficult for other drivers.
