How do golden retrievers get ear infections?
If you live with a Golden Retriever you’ve no doubt dealt with ear infections, which occur when those big Golden ears trap moisture in the inner ear. This causes bacteria and yeast growth, often indicated by a foul smell and dark buildup.
How can I help my dog with sore ears?
Treatment
- Eardrops. Medicated eardrops containing antibiotics, antifungals (to kill yeasts) and anti-inflammatories help to clear swelling and pain.
- Ear cleaning. It’s important to keep the inside of your dog’s ears clean while they heal.

What do vets prescribe for dog ear infection?
Antibiotics (such as amoxicillin-clavulanate, enrofloxacin, clindamycin, or cefpodoxime) will be used for a bacterial infection for 6-8 weeks minimum. If the infection is fungal in nature, an anti-fungal medication (most often itraconazole) will be prescribed.
How can you tell if your dog has a ear infection?

Can I put peroxide in my dogs ear?
Don’t use hydrogen peroxide on your pup. This common household product can actually cause irritation to healthy skin cells. Ears contain very sensitive tissue, and extended use of hydrogen peroxide could eventually lead to damage of the ear itself.
How do I get the gunk out of my dogs ear?
To clean the ears, tilt your dog’s head downward with one hand and squirt a gentle cleanser recommended by your veterinarian into the ear, filling the canal. Holding the ear closed, give it a nice massage, really squishing the cleanser around in there. That softens any gunk inside.
