How does Karana survive?
When Karana is left alone on the island, she must learn about her environment in order to survive. She learns that the Aleuts who come by ship are dangerous, not only to her but to the otters she loves. Finally, she is able to tame young birds and nurses an injured otter back to life.

Karana feeds it fresh fish daily, and the otter begins to take food from her hand. She names the otter, Mon-a-nee, which means “Little Boy with Large Eyes” in her language. When the weather makes it difficult for her to catch fish, Karana is unable to bring food to the otter.
