How can you tell if a fly rod is vintage?
Check for any other signs of wear that indicates use. Look for rod makers’ tags. Some better vintage rods have brass or alluminum tags with the craftsman’s name and rod model clearly marked. Tags can be glued or pinned in the cork handle or even wraped on the base of the bamboo rod length.
Are old bamboo fly rods worth anything?
In most cases, Grandpa’s old bamboo fly rod may well have personal value as a family heirloom, but as a collector’s item, it probably has little value. There are exceptions, though, and these are what keep our hopes alive.

How do I make my fly line float again?
Add just a few drops of mild dish soap. Don’t overdo it! All you need is enough to make a few bubbles and help loosen debris. Too much soap will leave a film on the flyline which may help it sink.
How do I keep my fly line from sinking?
Use Floatant Floatant is essentially a liquid wax that coats your fly in order to keep it from absorbing water, and therefore floating on the surface. Floatant is your best friend when it comes to dry fly fishing, and applying it to your fly should be the first thing you do after you tie one to your line.
How can I make my fly line float better?
A bucket of warm soapy water and a sponge will do a very good job. After cleaning your line, applying a dressing to your fly line will help it slide through the guides easily. I prefer a dressing called Glide. I have found that it is easy to apply and helps keep the line floating high.

Having a heavier line will put more bend in the rod, making it easier to feel the loading. This, in turn, will make it easier to throw accurate casts.
