FAQ

Can you wire headlights to a toggle switch?

Can you wire headlights to a toggle switch?

An inexpensive solution is to wire a simple toggle switch in place of the headlight switch, which generally also controls the driving lights. Toggle switches are available at most auto parts stores as well as electronics retailers, such as Radio Shack, and can usually be wired up without too much trouble.

What can a bad headlight switch cause?

One of the most common symptoms of a faulty headlight switch is issues switching between headlight modes. If the headlight switch fails or wears out it can cause problems operating the headlights. A broken switch may only work on certain modes, or may cause them to come on and off intermittently and erratically.

How can you tell if a headlight switch is bad?

Turn the switch to the parking lights setting and observe the meter. You should see zero or no more than a few Ohms of resistance. Move the negative lead to the output wire for the headlight relay, then turn the switch to the headlights setting and check the meter.

How do you check headlight wires with a multimeter?

Connect the black (negative lead) of the multimeter to a good ground on the frame or to the negative battery terminal. Set the multimeter on the voltage scale for 20 volts. Turn on the headlights and select low beam with the dimmer switch. The reading should be around 12.4 volts or so.

Why is one headlight dim and the other bright?

But most dim headlights are caused by a corroded ground wire. Just trace the wiring harness from the back of each headlight assembly and see where it connects to the vehicle body. If your headlights aren’t as bright as they used to be, yank one of the bulbs and look for gray or brown residue on the glass.

How much voltage should you have on the ground side of a headlight?

It should be around 12.5 to 12.8 volts if the battery is fully charged. Back-probe the connector on the dim headlight. The black lead on your DMM should go to a good ground–preferably to the battery negative post. The voltage you meter at the low-beam lug, as it turns out, is about 11 volts.

How do you increase voltage to headlights?

You can decrease the voltage drop to the bulbs. Through bypassing the fixed wiring with relays the voltage to the headlight can raise, offering better performance from the bulb. Normally standard wiring is correspondingly thin and a one volt drop is normal to the bulbs.

How do I get more power out of my headlights?

  1. Upgrade your headlight bulbs to LED. LEDs (light-emitting diode) are the brightest headlight bulbs.
  2. Upgrade your headlight bulbs to HID.
  3. Clean your headlights with a headlight restoration kit.
  4. Retrofit your headlights & fog lights.
  5. Buy premium halogen bulbs.

Are LED headlight conversion kits any good?

The verdict – make the switch to an LED headlight kit Compared to halogen bulbs, LED headlights are brighter, last longer and use less energy. But, for most consumers, the biggest draw is that they look much better than traditional bulbs.
