It is said that Bairam Khan, a Shia Muslim, was disliked by Sunni Turkic nobles and was dismissed by Akbar in 1560. He chose to go for Hajj and it was while travelling through Patan that he was assassinated by Hazi Khan Mewati of Alwar, a close confidant of a Hindu king of north India.
