What happens to the other gerbil when one dies?
Gerbils grieve when a bonded partner dies. This bonded partner could be a breeding partner or a same-sex sibling. A grieving gerbil will be lethargic, i.e. not move much, and will eat and drink less. This can last for months.
Can I introduce a new gerbil to my old one?
Gerbils are very territorial, and will be aggressive towards other unfamiliar gerbils. Ideally, you should pick out two gerbils that are already living together, or that are between six and eight weeks old. This will result in a much smoother transition for them to live together in the new cage you will provide.
Should I get another gerbil after one dies?
It depends on the age, gender & temperament of the gerbil. It is quite common in gerbil ownership that one will pass away, leaving the other gerbil by themselves. If your lone gerbil could still potentially live another few years, it would be a good idea to consider getting them a friend so they do not get lonely.
Can you have two male gerbils together?
A pair of gerbils (two males, or two females) is the happiest and safest combination. When two gerbils live together, they will rely on each other for company. Fighting between a bonded pair of gerbils is unlikely. You can also keep 3 gerbils together in a trio, but the risk of declanning is higher.
Is it better to have one or two gerbils?
Gerbils are social animals and need the constant company of their own kind. The only exception to this is the Fat-tailed gerbil, as females of this species can be kept alone, and will often fight with other females. In general, it’s best to keep between two and four gerbils.
Is it OK to separate gerbils?
Gerbils can make a lot of noise, but if you see that one gerbil draws the blood of another, then you need to separate them temporarily – you’ll need to use gloves to do this in case their teeth catch you. Be careful not to separate them for too long, as they may begin to smell differently if kept apart for a few hours.
Why did my gerbils attack each other?
Another reason gerbils will fight is if the dominance structure shifts. It’s possible the more dominant of the two is aging and becoming feeble, and the other gerbil is making a play to be in charge. You did the exact right thing to separate the gerbils. Once gerbils start fighting it can turn deadly.
Are male gerbils friendly?
Some owners say males are more docile and friendly towards each other than females. However, it’s generally a good idea to choose males if you want to keep more than two gerbils together, as they seem slightly happier in larger groups than females. There is very little size difference between male and female gerbils.
