How eggs get to your plate?
A packing machine gently loads the eggs from the conveyor into plastic trays. The farmer (and if they are lucky a family member or two) runs the packing machine, pulls out any cracked eggs, and carefully stacks the trays of eggs onto a pallet.
What do farmers do with eggs?
Egg farmers are responsible for the care and maintenance of laying hens used as part of an egg producing poultry farm. They can work for large commercial operations or run an independent family farm and can have anywhere from a few dozen to many thousands of hens.

How do chickens lay eggs without a rooster?
You don’t need a rooster for your hens to lay eggs, as hens will lay just as many eggs whether there’s a rooster around or not. However, a rooster is needed to fertilize the eggs to hatch them into baby chicks.

Modern hybrid laying hens have been bred to try to eliminate the urge to brood, which means that a hen won’t usually try to incubate her eggs by sitting on the nest to hatch them.
Do chickens mourn the death of chickens?
Once a hen nears its natural death, she will wander away from the rest of the chickens, and look for a quiet place to rest. Though, interestingly enough, when one of them dies – the hens who were socially closest to the deceased are known to mourn.
Do chickens get sad when a friend dies?
The dying chicken passes alone. A grieving hen avoids interacting with the flock and sits in a corner with puffed-up feathers like a chicken that feels ill. Some mourn only temporarily, but others never seem to recover from the loss of a flockmate.
Do chickens get sad when you give them away?
Chickens can become distressed; they are wired to seek shelter and the warmth and safety of flock behavior, so if you remove them from either of these, they are irritated. But irritation isn’t the same as “sadness.” Plants for instance can become irritated.
Do chickens miss their owners?
It’s not common for chickens to get attached to humans, however, they have been found to follow their owners from time to time. However, many chicken owners are 100% positive that chickens do feel affection for them.
What are chickens scared of?
Owls, snakes, and hawks are common predators to chickens so chickens have a natural aversion to them. Chickens are smart and will quickly learn that the owl isn’t really dangerous. That’s why many chicken owners purchase mechanical predators to scare chickens away.
How do chickens show affection?
Chickens can and do show affection to their owners. The signs can come in the form of rubbing their beak on your neck or fact, squatting to be petted, watching your every move, talking to you in their own way, tilting their head when you talk, lays down next to you.
Can chickens learn their names?
A chicken will learn it’s name and quicker than you think. When you pick up your chicken for their daily inspection or to give them attention, say their name and they will learn it very quickly. Chickens can learn their owner’s name. They will also learn your name if you say it when you approach them.
Why do hens cluck after laying an egg?
The eggs song is the cackling noise hens often make after laying an egg. Cackling is a “buck-buck-buck-badaaack” sound, repeated often over as long as 15 minutes after laying an egg and thought to draw predators away from the nesting area. It may also be used to aid mating and as a location finder for the flock.
Can I eat the first egg a chicken lays?
Yep, you can eat the very first egg. It was an honor to be the one in the family who got to eat it. In the hot weather, it’s best to collect them more than once a day, and some hens will take to eating them if they’re left too long. Our hens seem to want to use the same nest.
Is it painful for a chicken to lay an egg?
Chickens appear to feel some pain when laying eggs, but it’s not usually very bad for very long. That said, some authorities have concerns about large and “Jumbo” eggs causing more pain to hens. Younger chickens may also experience more pain while laying eggs.
