Can you hurt your baby by sleeping on your stomach?

If you’re a stomach sleeper, you may worry that this sleeping position could harm your fetus. You can rest easy — the wall of the uterus has thickened to help protect your baby. Even though it’s safe, you likely won’t find stomach-sleeping comfortable in your second and third trimesters.

What will happen if you lay on your stomach while pregnant?

Sleeping on the stomach may also cause neck and shoulder problems, such as pain, stiffness, and soreness. Some people experience lower back pain and pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy, which make it more difficult to sleep.

What if I accidentally slept on my back while pregnant?

You may want to get used to a new sleep position now, since you shouldn’t sleep on your back after 20 weeks of pregnancy. When you lie belly-up, the weight of your uterus can compress a major blood vessel, called the vena cava. This disrupts blood flow to your baby and leaves you nauseated, dizzy, and short of breath.

Can you sleep on front when pregnant?

It’s fine to sleep on your front in early pregnancy but from your second trimester onwards as your bump grows it is unlikely you will find it comfortable to sleep on your front. Should you wake in the night on your front, simply turn to find a comfortable position on your side.

Which sleeping position is not good during pregnancy?

Some experts recommend pregnant women avoid sleeping on their backs during the second and third trimesters. Why? The back sleep position rests the entire weight of the growing uterus and baby on your back, your intestines and your vena cava, the main vein that carries blood back to the heart from your lower body.

What is the safest side to sleep on while pregnant?

Experts recommend lying on your left side. It improves circulation, giving nutrient-packed blood an easier route from your heart to the placenta to nourish your baby. Lying on the left side also keeps your expanding body weight from pushing down too hard on your liver. While either side is okay, left is best.
