Are all OBD scanners the same?
Not all the best OBD2 scanners are created equal. There are two general types of devices: Handheld OBD2 scanners come with their own screen and cable to plug into the car’s OBD port.
Is it worth buying an OBD2 Scanner?
No it is not worth the cost. If you live in the states almost all major auto parts chains (Advance Auto, Autozone, etc) will do a check or even loan you the tool for free. Unless you’re checking codes daily, it’s just not cost prohibitive. The error codes produced by OBD2 are rather generic.

What is the difference between an OBD reader and scanner?
Both code readers and scan tools interface with a car’s on-board computer or diagnostic system to identify or troubleshoot problems. A code reader is a simplified version of a scan tool, but it’s only capable of performing basic scans of trouble codes.
Do cheap code readers work?
A basic code reader that sells for less than $50 may be fine for reading “generic” diagnostic trouble codes, but it may not read “OEM” or “enhanced” codes that are vehicle specific. These are self-checks that the OBD II system runs to make sure the vehicle is operating properly and is running clean.
Are car code readers accurate?
They are accurate in telling what system or component is having a problem. They do not ever indicate what component needs to be replaced. That requires diagnosis and testing. A code related to a particular component can be “set” by wiring issues related to that component when the component itself is fine, for example.
What will a code reader tell you?
An engine code reader/scanner can help you make the drive/no drive decision and even help you fix the problem. It works by plugging into the car’s computer system and displaying a “trouble code.” A scanner gives you real-time “live” information so you see the same data your car’s computer is seeing.
What are P codes?
P-code is an abbreviated term for Place Code. P-codes are similar to zip codes and postal codes and are part of a data management system that provides unique reference codes to individual locations. These codes provide a systematic means of linking and exchanging data and analyzing relationships between them.
Are engine code readers Universal?
OBD scanners are universal and will read generic fault codes. Some vehicles however use both generic and manufacturer specific fault codes. Many of the manufacturer specific codes may not be read by a basic universal type OBD scanner.
