A life of itself. New forms of solitude in the female

Against the negative representations that make the solitude residential women experience negative, a privation, a lack, or a failure, and Erika Flahault, in his book A life in itself. New forms of solitude in the female, offers another vision, which seeks to identify the constructional aspects of the loneliness of women.

In the first part of his book, the author demonstrates that living alone is for the women, the culmination of a long process. This condition, which may seem so common, is in the scale of western history new. In traditional societies, the role of women is defined in the marriage and through social reproduction : the woman is first a producer and procreative, and only the second function gives it a social status that is valued. The single woman represents an exception, a breach of the rule, and a danger to society. The status of a single woman is not even conceivable for a society that does not think the woman, in the context of dependency ratios for male and family. A woman without a spouse is still supported by family, clan or community. Erika Flahault draws in the first chapter a quick overview of the place of women in society from the ancient cities until the Twentieth century.
