From 1982-1984, the TH700R4 came with a 27-spline input shaft. Later production units were equipped with a 30-spline input. Although the later 30-spline version is more desirable, both units can be interchanged if the proper mating.

Can a 700R4 handle 600hp?
The 700R4 can be built to handle 600 – 700 HP fairly easy with the right parts and the right torque converter as long as you start with a 1988 & later transmission. If you are going to have more than 750 horsepower, and you have a choice of transmission, then the 4L80E would be the way to go.
Can you swap a 700R4 with a TH400?
Yes there are aftermarkets for both but stock, they’re the same and rated for the same input torque. If I was going to have a crappy TH 350 I’d much rather have a 700R4 which has a better 1st gear, and overdrive to boot.

The 700R4 goes from a 3.06 -> 1.62 1-2 shift, which is way more aggressive than the Turbo 350’s 2.74 -> 1.57. Simply put, the TH350 is going to keep the vehicle in the power band longer.
