Are most first babies early or late?
As it turns out, both are true.
- If “early” means preterm — before 37 weeks of pregnancy — first babies are more likely to be early.
- And if “late” means after 40 weeks, first babies are more likely to be late: about 15%, compared to 10% of other babies.
Do most first time moms go past due date?
Statistics show us that most first timers will not go into spontaneous labor until after their due date (more on this later), but even knowing this, so many of my clients have told me they think they will go into labor “early.” As a doula, this never made sense to me.

Our general rule is to sleep as long as possible if you’re starting to feel contractions at night. Most of the time you can lay down and rest during early labor. If you wake up in the middle of the night and notice contractions, get up and use the bathroom, drink some water, and GO BACK TO BED.
Do contractions feel like you have to poop?
Early contractions may feel like period pain. You may have cramps or backache, or both. Or you may just have aching or heaviness in the lower part of your tummy. You may feel the need to poo or just feel uncomfortable, and not be able to pin down why.
What does pushing a baby out feel like?
Very visible contractions, with your uterus rising noticeably with each. An increase in bloody show. A tingling, stretching, burning or stinging sensation at the vagina as your baby’s head emerges. A slippery wet feeling as your baby emerge.
Do you always have diarrhea before labor?

If you are nearing your due date, though, looser stools than usual may be a sign that labor is just around the corner. If your symptoms are mild, keep yourself hydrated and watch out for other early signs of labor.

Your baby moves less: Women often notice that their baby is less active the day before labor begins. No one is sure why. It may be that the baby is saving up energy for the birth. If you feel less movement, call your doctor or midwife, as sometimes decreased movement can mean that the baby is in trouble.

If your water breaks and you feel the cord protruding from your vaginal canal (cord prolapse) – an event needing immediate medical assistance. If your water breaks and is greenish/brown, foul smelling or accompanied by other signs of infection.
