Are Munchkin cats rare?

Are Munchkin cats rare?

Never heard of a Munchkin? That’s probably because they’re relatively new, having been legitimized by The International Cat Association as their own breed in the early 2000s. Because these cats are the result of genetic mutation and a somewhat complicated breeding process, they are relatively rare.

Why are there Munchkin cats?

The breed — named after the munchkin characters in “The Wizard of Oz” —came about by accident after a Louisiana school teacher found two pregnant, short-legged cats hiding underneath her car during the early 80s. It is believed that all munchkin cats can trace their roots back to these two cats.

How common are Manx cats?

Ataxia, Vestibular Disease in Cats. Ataxia, in general, is a condition relating to a sensory dysfunction that produces loss of coordination of the limbs, head, and/or trunk. Sensory (proprioceptive) ataxia occurs when the spinal cord is slowly compressed.

Do cats without tails have problems?

Cats born without tails (Manx) typically function perfectly well and won’t have balance issues, quite frankly because it’s how they’ve grown and developed. A cat who lost his tail could have some issues right after it happens, because he’s basically lost an appendage.

Do cats need tails for balance?

When you see your cat walking along narrow fences or high places, their tail is hard at work, acting as a counterbalance and help cats stay balanced and accurate when pouncing on prey. Cats also use their tails as a means of communication.
