Are otters and ferrets related?
Ferrets are mustelids. The Mustelidae family is the weasel family which includes otters, badgers, skunks, pine martens, polecats, wolverines, and more! Domestic ferrets, similar to domestic dogs, have many differences than their wild counterparts though, including an inability to function on their own in the outdoors!
Why can’t you have an otter as a pet?
Not only is a home environment not suitable for the welfare of otters, but this relationship can also have some undesirable consequences for their human owners, as they can be loud, destructive and can inflict nasty bites. As a result, these pets are often abandoned.

Half a dozen attacks have been reported since. The only known fatalities occurred in captivity when otters killed intruders to protect their cubs. The fact is, otters don’t want to have anything to do with you. But they’re extremely territorial.
