Can black fly bites kill you?
They can bite an animal – or human – so much that their saliva causes death. Black flies live in most rivers, and plant parasites that live in the human body, devastating it over time. Untreated, the parasites can cause pains, organ failure, and blindness over the life of the sufferer.
How do you treat black fly bites?
Put a cool compress or ice cube over the bite to reduce swelling….Apply any one of the following to the bite area:
- Benadryl ointment.
- Baking soda and water, mixed into a paste.
- Calamine lotion.
- Hydrocortisone anti-itch cream such as Gold Bond.
- Rubbing alcohol.
- Witch hazel.
- Apple cider vinegar.
Can biting flies kill you?
Their bites are tiny, but can be painful and very itchy. Worse still, they’re very hard to kill because they’re so hard to see, making these biting flies frustrating and annoying – but at least not deadly.

What smells do black flies hate?
To avoid being the favorite host for these pesky insects, try to go for unscented products or without perfume during high bug season. If you really want to keep the extra scent, go for smells that will deter black flies, like lavender, vanilla, or pine.
Does vinegar kill black fly?
Pour equal parts Apple Cider Vinegar and Warm Water into a small dish, add 8-10 drops of dish soap (we used Dawn-blue), stir to combine. Set-out near an area where the flies are feeding (away from children and pets)!
