Can Newsela read to students?
With Newsela’s Read Aloud feature, we’ve gone beyond WCAG requirements so students and teachers can listen to any Newsela article on the web or in the student app. Students can follow along with word-by-word highlighting that can be played or paused, in both English and Spanish, as needed.
How do you get Newsela to read to you?
How to use Read Aloud
- Click the “Read Aloud” icon.
- Click the arrow “rewind” icon to start the read aloud from the article title.
- Click the pause button to stop the read aloud.
- Click the play button to continue from where the read aloud feature was paused.
What are the reading levels in Newsela?
Lexile ranges generally have overlapping grade bands, but there cannot be any overlap on Newsela, because each article level can correspond to only one grade.
- Grade 2: 300-500.
- Grade 3: 501-620.
- Grade 4: 621-780.
- Grade 5: 781-920.
- Grade 6: 921-1010.
- Grade 7: 1011-1109.
- Grade 8: 1110-1180.

How do I assign a question in Newsela?
- Find an article you want to assign and click Assign.
- This will take you to the assignment page, where you select the class (or classes) for the assignment. You’ll also see two optional steps: Adding instructions and adjusting the reading level your students will see.
- Click Assign Now.
Does Newsela post Google classroom?
Teachers have the ability to attach Newsela articles to assignments, materials, and discussion board posts in Google Classroom.

Is Newsela free to teachers?
Every teacher and student can use Newsela for free. Teachers are able to see individually how each student preforms on a quiz. Teachers and students are able to make annotated notes on the articles and share these notes with one another.
What is Flipgrid and how does it work?
Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create “grids” to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions, called “topics,” and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.
What do the levels on Newsela mean?
Over time, Newsela creates customized reading levels for each student and presents them with articles at their current reading level. These levels are determined based on a combination of factors: A student’s grade level (set for each class by the teacher)

Can you annotate in Newsela?
Students can annotate at newsela.com, when using a computer or netbook, or on the Newsela mobile app. To annotate a piece of text on a laptop or netbook: Click and drag your curser over the text you’d like to annotate.
How do I filter in Newsela?
After you search for a topic, you can narrow a result with a filter. Select your filters from the drop downs above your search results, including selecting articles by Collection, suggested grade band, text level, and language. Click “Apply” once you have selected a filter or set of filters.
How do you change grade level in Newsela?

- On an article or Text Set, click Create Assignment.
- Under Text Level, click Adjust Level.
- Select a reading level.
- Click Assign Now to assign the article(s) to your students at the selected level.
How do I see student work in Newsela?
Newsela’s activity feed show recent school and student activity in Newsela.
- Click Binder at the top of the page.
- Select Activity Feed from the drop-down menu.
- This will bring up the recent work completed by students in your class and recent teachers who have joined your school.
Do students need to sign in to Newsela?

How can a student revise their writing once they submit response Newsela?

- Click “Binder” in the upper right to review your work.
- Find any articles with “Revision Requested” next to the assignment title.
- Click the activity row.
- Click the teacher or title of the class for which the request has been made.
- Review your teacher’s comments.
How do I Unsubmit an assignment in Newsela?
Update or Delete Assignments
- At the top of the page, hover over Binder.
- Click in the drop-down menu.
- Click on the assignment you want to edit. This will take you to the assignment page.
- On the assignment page, click Edit.
- After making your updates, click Save.
