Can you embroider on a quilt?
While an overall design is always an option, custom quilting embroidery quilts can really bring their elements to life. It doesn’t mean that the quilting must cover up the embroidery design. Instead, the quilting stitches follow the natural contours, shapes or color breaks in the design.
Do you need to back stitch when quilting?
Don’t backstitch. Don’t overlock…you get the idea! We don’t build up thread at the end for the same reason we don’t build up thread at the beginning. When you finish a line of quilting just stop, rotate your handwheel to bring your needle all the way up, lift your foot, and pull the block off your machine.
What stitch length should I use for machine quilting?
For straight stitching, it is advised to set your machine’s stitch length to 2.5 to 3.0 or about 8-12 stitches per inch. This range works quite well for a majority of machine quilting but there are always exceptions when you make a rule. For threads with sparkle or shine, use a longer stitch length.

How do you secure a quilting stitch?
Beginning and Ending Machine Quilted Stitches
- Lift the needle and pull on the top thread to bring the bobbin thread to the surface.
- Return the sewing machine needle to the same spot, keeping hold of both threads.
- Take five or six tiny stitches to secure the beginning of the line.
Do you start quilting in the middle?
Start quilting in the middle of the quilt and work your way out. This will eliminate pleats and puckering that may form if you try to work from one side to the other.
How do you bury threads when hand quilting?
Take hold of the small loop of the knot between your index finger and thumb. Keep pulling the thread gently with your working hand … …and very small. Make sure the knot remains near the fabric by holding it between your finger and thumb and gently pulling the thread until it is a formed knot.
How do you end a knot?
Always stop sewing with about three inches of thread to spare until you get good at making knots. Loop the thread to make a knot, but instead of just pulling the thread into a knot immediately, place your finger on top of the thread to hold it down against the fabric near where you want the knot to end up.

Can you tie a quilt without a frame?

When hand quilting Do you use single or double thread?
The best thread to use is one made for quilting; it’s slightly thicker, stronger and longer-wearing than regular sewing thread. Of course, if you’re making a purely decorative quilt, choose any thread you like. I use a “between” needle for hand-quilting.
