Why does touching a tent make it leak?
Why does touching the canvas of a tent during a rain storm make the tent leak? When you touch wet canvas, surface tension will draw water to your finger. What is left will still draw condensation more than the rest of the inside tent surface, so it will appear to leak from that point as long as the humidity is high.

Can you sleep in a tent when it’s raining?
Keep your tent high and dry when camping in the rain. When you set up your tent, one of the worst choices you can make is to place it in a low lying area, such as at the bottom of a slope. It can be tempting to set up your tent in a place like that, because it’s often clear and relatively flat.
How do you keep a tent floor dry in the rain?

- Place a ground cloth under your tent.
- Always set your tent on higher ground than the surrounding areas.
- If the floor is leaking, placing a tarp inside the tent can help keep the flooring more dry.

How do you waterproof the bottom of a tent?
There are three ways to waterproof your tent:
- Seal the seams: Applying seam sealer can help keep moisture from seeping through.
- Refresh the urethane coating: The urethane coatings on the inside of your rainfly and the floor of your tent are the primary barriers against moisture.
Does a new tent need to be waterproofed?
After that application is dry you are going to need to get a waterproof spray and cover the OUTSIDE of the seams and again let dry. If you have a newer tent, you will see the seams are Tape Sealed. These will not need to be waterproofed. But odds are the Rainfly seams and the seams on the floor will still need it.
How often do tents need waterproofing?
As a rule of thumb if you’re using your tent on average for 2 or 3 weeks a year then proofing it every couple of years should make sure it maintains it’s waterproofness. If you’re willing to play it by ear, just wait until it starts to leak, then do it!
Do you seam seal inside or outside of tent?
To seam seal your tent, set it up outside on a sunny day. Some people tell you to apply seam sealer on the outside of the tent and some say inside. Most tent makers and seam sealing instructions tell you to seal seams on the urethane-coated side of the fabric, which would be on the inside.
