Do Harley primary chains stretch?
As chains stretch and wear, they run tighter at one spot than another. Always adjust the free play at the tightest spot in the chain. Allowing the chain to run loose will cause the motorcycle to jerk when running at low speed resulting in excessive chain and sprocket wear.
How much oil does a Sportster primary take?
Insert the nozzle of a funnel into the primary chain inspection hole. Pouring slowly, pour approximately 1 qt of oil into the transmission. As you pour, watch the clutch inspection hole. Make sure that the oil level stays below the edge of the clutch inspection hole.

Look through the derby cover port, located under the primary housing you just pulled off. Take note of the transmission fluid level. It should be level with the bottom of the clutch assembly. Add transmission fluid if the level is below this.

Answer: For any Harley Twin-Cam engine, we highly recommend using AMSOIL Synthetic 20W-50 in “all three holes” (as they put it) for two essential reasons. These are called AMSOIL V-Twin Primary Oil and AMSOIL V-Twin Transmission Oil.
Can I use car oil in my Harley-Davidson?
Although you can temporarily use motor oil, it may end up damaging your bike. If you want an oil to use in all weather conditions they recommend that you should use SAE 20W50. For low temperatures, Harley recommends SAE 10W40, which prevents low-temperature issues.
Is synthetic oil good for Air-Cooled Engines?
The wider range of temperatures that synthetic oil can withstand is well suited for the air-cooled VW engine. On average, when synthetic oil is run in an air-cooled VW engine, head temperatures stay the same, but engine oil temps reduce by anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees.
