Can I go to the Met without a reservation?
Members and Patrons Members can enter the Museum by simply having their Membership Card scanned at any of the Museum entrances at any time. Reservations are not required but are highly recommended.
Is the Met Cloisters worth visiting?
The cloisters are located in Fort Tryon Park in north Harlem and in the Washington Heights section of the city. As you can see on these photos, the Fort Tryon lays by to the Hudson. It’s really worth a visit in the spring during the blooming season with a fantastic view on the Washington Bridge.
How long do people spend at the Met Cloisters?
It takes two to three hours to do the Cloisters justice. You’ve come all this way, so you might as well make a day of it. Take your time, don’t cut corners.
How long does it take to get through the Met?
You’ll probably need 3-5 hours just to see the permanent collection, so take advantage of the many resting spots – found in just about every room – which can give your feet a break and let you take in the surrounding atmosphere.
Is the Met Cloisters outside?
It is located in Fort Tyron Park in Washington Heights, which is in uptown Manhattan. The exterior of the museum is gorgeous. The buildings are centered around four cloisters, which were brought over from Europe right before World War II. It’s peaceful just to walk around outside admiring the architecture and views.
Are dogs allowed at the Met Cloisters?
The Met Fifth Avenue and The Met Cloisters Service dogs are welcome at both Museum locations.
Can you leave the Met and come back?
Yes, over a year ago. As long as you still have your sticker you can. Make sure you keep it visible when you walk back through.
Can you take photos in the Met?
Visitors may not use pens, video cameras, or selfie sticks in the galleries. Still photography is permitted without flash and tripod and for noncommercial use only. Visit the Lobby desk for the Museum’s policy on gallery sketching and photography. Strollers are permitted in most areas.
Does the Met have a dress code?

Can you wear jeans to opera?
Weekday and matinee performances are generally where you’ll see more casually dressed opera-goers in business casual or jeans and a nice blouse or button-up.
