An adult degu is around 15cm long and has a 15cm tail with a tuft at the end.
Is it legal to own a degu?
Prohibitions. Some jurisdictions consider common degus as a potential invasive species and forbid owning them as a pet. In the United States, they are illegal to own in California, Utah, Georgia, Connecticut, and Alaska.
Are degus cuddly pets?
Degus aren’t really ‘cuddly’ pets so we wouldn’t recommend cuddling your degus. It’s much better to give them lots of toys and activities and just watch them be themselves!

The first step to taming your Degus is to start talking to them. Speaking in a soft voice will allow them to get used to you, recognising you every time you see them and help build the bond between you.

When the degu is standing on your hand to take the treat, work up to scooping up your degu for gentle handling. Keep them cupped in one hand with another over their back to prevent them jumping. Let your degu explore your arms and legs while you are sitting down.
How do you train a Degu?
Once your degus are comfortable with walking on your hands and arms, you can pick them up. Let them jump on your hand, pick them up (be sure to keep your hands flat and open), let them walk around your arms for a while and then put them down, then reward them straight away.
Can degus lose their tail?
If Your Degu Sheds His Tail Most of the time, degus are fine after they lose their tails, but occasionally they need stitches or develop infections. If your pet “degloves” his skin, he’ll probably bleed for a little while. After the skin’s gone, his tail should begin to dry up and atrophy.
