How does Straw pan flute work?
The pan flute is an end-blown flute. Sound is produced by the vibration of an air stream blowing across an open hole at the end of the tube. The air moves through the straw, vibrating along the way and out to the end.
How does the amount of effort in blowing the straw flute affect the intensity of sound produced?
The pitch of a sound corresponds to the frequency of the sound wave. The shorter straw should have made a sound wave with a higher frequency than the longer straw, and so the shorter straw should have made a higher pitch than the longer straw.
What does a straw sound like?
When the reed vibrates at just the right frequency, the air in the straw vibrates powerfully, and you hear a loud, buzzing note, sort of like an oboe. When you blow through the straw, there is a high pressure in your mouth. As air rushes through the straw, the pressure in the straw drops.
Why does a flute make sound?
Sound is produced on the flute by blowing: the flutist blows through the mouth hole (embouchure hole) and the stream of air that makes contact with the edge is cyclically directed outward and inward. The flutist uses tone holes and keys to shorten the vibrating air column, thus producing an increase in pitch.
