How is 2 2×4 equal 10?

Apparently 2+2×4=10 because you always x before + This is news to me. The way I was taught, sums are read left to right unless ( ) tell you to do that bit first. So for 10 the sum should be 2+(2×4)=10 Otherwise 2+2=4 then 4×4=16 Have I been doing it wrong for 45 years?
