How is Heron adapted?
The ability of Great Blue Herons to strike at prey with incredible speed is due to the structure of their neck bones. This adaptation combined with long legs and a long neck allows these herons to forage successfully in a variety of aquatic environments and on an extensive menu of prey.
How do herons hunt?
Great blue herons hunt by stealth and appear to have endless patience as they watch and wait for prey, including fish, amphibians, small mammals and nestlings of other birds. Generally found hunting by themselves, herons will often feed in large numbers when food is plentiful.

Typically, a heron or egret will grab the food between its upper and lower bill, and but once in a while the bird uses its beak to actually spear its intended dinner. Whether the bird grabs its meal or stabs its meal, it always ends the same way: the prey goes down the throat in one big gulp.

Why do baby ducks disappear?
They’ll drag a baby off and leave no sign when they can. It’s also possible that a domestic dog came into your yard and frightened them and they’re in hiding. Ducks can be outstanding at hiding, and may not come home for a day or two. If a raccoon got one, the others may just be in hiding.
What can kill baby ducks?
Medicated chick feed (which I don’t recommend anyway) can kill your ducklings. They eat a lot more than chicks and can easily overdose on the medication. So, steer clear of the medicated feed bags and you’ll be good. The medication is for coccidiosis, which ducks are pretty resistant to, by the way.
What is poisonous to ducks?
There are many edible flowers, but also some toxic ones including buttercup, daffodill, iris, lilies, lily of the valley, lupine, poppies, sweet peas and tulips. Most weeds and herbs are safe for your ducks to eat, but milkweed, pennyroyal and vetch can all be toxic.
Why does my duckling keep opening its mouth?
If mostly open, they may be stressed, overheated, or have a respiratory illness. Their nares (duck nostrils) should be free of scratches, bubbles, discharge, and general crustiness.
