Is getting a job with the FBI hard?
Becoming an FBI Agent is a tremendously difficult and competitive process. It takes years of time, planning, and hard work to mold yourself into the kind of candidate the FBI is looking to hire. It’s not going to happen overnight, and the hiring process itself can take a year or longer.
What can disqualify you from joining the FBI?
These include:
- Non-U.S. citizenship.
- Conviction of a felony (Special Agent candidates only: conviction of a domestic violence misdemeanor or more serious offense)
- Violation of the FBI Employment Drug Policy (please see below for additional details)
- Default on a student loan insured by the U.S. Government.
Is there an age limit for joining the CIA?
The CIA pays out a one-time lump sum bonus—the maximum amount is $35,000—to individuals fluent in another language. You must be a U.S. Citizen and be no older than 35 years of age (the age limit may be waived in certain cases). If you are married, your spouse must also be a U.S. Citizen.
Can you join the FBI at 50?
The FBI or CIA websites don’t specify age limitations for analysts, and odds are these organizations will hire you at age 40, 50 or 60 if you speak fluent Arabic or Chinese or have specialized information technology, cryptography or cybersecurity skills.
Can you join FBI at 40?
The FBI may disqualify applicants at any time if it is determined that they will reach age 37 before appointment. Current FBI employees must apply prior to their 39th birthday and must be appointed and assigned to the FBI Academy no later than the month of their 40th birthday.

All FBI agents must hold a bachelor’s degree at minimum, and many possess a master’s degree or higher. FBI agents often earn degrees in fields such as criminal justice or political science, though the Bureau does not maintain any specific academic major requirements for applicants.
Can a felon work for the FBI?
You cannot be employed by the FBI if you have been convicted of a felony or have used drugs in a manner that goes against the Employment Drug Policy. You must also pass a drug test administered by the FBI. Anyone who has defaulted on a federal student loan is not eligible for employment.
Can the FBI clear your record?

Will a sealed record show up on FBI check?
The agency creates a federal record of the charges. The FBI generally doesn’t update those records, however, so they show up even if someone is found not guilty, if the charges are dismissed or if the records are sealed. “No matter what happens to the state record, the FBI record lives on.”
