The rule of thumb is that you want to get a blade that is 1/4 ” or smaller then the length of the sole. It should not be any shorter than that, but typically anywhere from 1/4″ to 1/14″ shorter than the sole length.

Can I sharpen my skates at home?
Speed- and tour skates have a flat glide surface and can reliably be sharpened at home with fairly basic equipment. A long stone, and a fixture to hold the blades perpendicular will work fine.
How can I stretch my figure skates at home?
Rub some water on the insides of your skates and wear them around the house for awhile. Wet a pair of socks before putting on your skates, and then wear them around the house. Or just have a good skate shop punch out the ankles and anywhere else it hurts. Than skate!
