Education and citizenship: theoretical issues, policies and practices
.
The Research Network of Sociology of Education is pleased to invite the submission of abstracts on the theme of “Education for citizenship” for the Conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal.
Socialization, and in particular citizenship, have been objectives of the education system in the western world since its establishment and increasingly since World War II. Through the “socialization” and citizenship education, the society it establishes and strengthens relations between individuals and their political community. The work of Marshall in the 1940s introduced the distinction between the rights-civil, political and social within of citizenship. Some theorists argue that citizenship is a concept of “unifying” that implies that rights and duties, in a permanent exchange, should be considered in relation to each other. In recent decades, rapid social changes that come occurring in the areas of globalization, human mobility, the development of norms and cultural pluralism, etc exert pressure on the traditional basis of citizenship (both in the field of national belonging as the “natural”), transforming it into a new “cultural” and negotiation.
More recent approaches, such as multiculturalism and feminism, they also build the concept of citizenship differently than in the past: citizenship becomes a key issue even for personal identity, combining particular properties and universal. These critical approaches question the power of the institution of education in which the younger members of society are prepared for a meaningful and broad social participation when they are adults. The agencies formal, non-formal and informal are committed to this task, not only through the transmission of universal values, but also asking for every citizen, a future in which they can actively demonstrate their citizenship, as the basis for the recognition of the rights (the paradigm of the “state of being active”). A role so important that it is considerably restricted by the economic policies of cuts in the schools, while at the same time schools are required to work better, without a clear understanding of the measurable results or benefits of these changes.
The “papers” can try to answer some or all of the key issues follows:
- How do these changes affect the schooling?
- How do the schools before the cuts?
- How is treated the “new”, multiple, open, and global citizenship by the reforms of the curricula in the educational systems of different countries?
- How do you practice active citizenship at all levels of education? What are the results and the limitations of that active citizenship?
- What they are receptive to the students of different ages to issues related to the active and multiple citizenships? How would you perceive or construct (even informally) their relationship with the public sphere?
- What is the impact of citizenship education on student achievement?
- What new challenges arise as a result of these changes?
- How do you oppose the communities and interest groups to the cuts in education, and how to cooperate with the schools in citizenship education?
- What is the role of the family in the construction of education in active citizenship? Do these changes affect the relationship between school and family?
