Is it okay to call your professor on the phone?

Is it okay to call your professor on the phone?

No. In the cultures and universities I’m familiar with, it is never appropriate to call your professor’s personal or mobile phone. It would be very unusual even to call his/her office phone. And if you ask in person instead of by email (in the first place) you’re more likely to get what you want.

How do you talk to a professor on the phone?

  1. Call them by the right title. A “Doctor” is someone with a PhD; not all professors have a PhD.
  2. Tell the truth.
  3. Be prepared to do the work.
  4. Be clear and concise.
  5. Pay social calls.
  6. Do not, under any circumstances, flirt.
  7. Prepare for disappointment.
  8. Hold the threats.

Calling a professor or someone with a doctorate “Mr.” or “Mrs.” can be disrespectful as it does not acknowledge the years of work they have done to earn the title of “Dr.” or “Professor”. This is especially true for women as “Mrs.” reduces a woman to her marital status and ignores her academic accomplishments.

How do you correct a professor?

“What is the polite way to correct a professor when they are wrong?”- After class, not in public, ask about their grounds for the statement.
