What figure skating blade should I get?
When measuring figure skating blades to fit figure skating boots, the blade will typically be 1/4″ shorter than the boot sole length. So, for instance if the sole length of your boot measures 10.5″ long, then you would want to purchase a figure skating blade that will be 10.25″ long.
Are figure skates supposed to be sharp?
Figure skates are sharpened with very different goals than hockey skates. NEVER have them done by one of those automatic machines you find in some rinks. Figure skates are ground with a “hollow” in the bottom (to give them those “edges” you hear so much about).
Why are ice skates so sharp?
Only those edges are actually being sharpened. The sharpening makes these edges very thin and free from what we call “nicks” or “burrs.” Many hockey players do not even know these things. No amount of passes over the skate sharpener will make the skates more sharp, only cut through more steel.
Why do you think ice is slippery enough to skate on with sharp bladed ice skates?
That amount of pressure lowers the melting temperature only a small amount, from 32 degrees to 31.97 degrees. One, now more widely accepted, invokes friction: the rubbing of a skate blade or a shoe bottom over ice, according to this view, heats the ice and melts it, creating a slippery layer.
Is it easier to ice skate with sharp blades?
