Should I be driving with overdrive on or off?
Overdrive improves fuel economy, and makes for less wear and tear on the vehicle when you are driving at highway speeds. Having the overdrive off is fine if you are driving in hilly areas, but if you are on the highway, it is best to have it on because you will get better gas mileage.

Ray: There’s really no good reason to limit the transmission to third gear. The more time you spend in your highest gear (overdrive), the better your gas mileage. And the higher the gear, the fewer times the engine turns for the same amount of distance traveled, so the longer the engine lasts.

Why would you turn off overdrive?
